Does the PT100 have any requirements for its connecting wires? The answer is undoubtedly yes. As a platinum resistance temperature detector widely used in industrial temperature measurement, the PT100’s accuracy and stability depend to a large extent on the quality and characteristics of its lead wires.

I. Material of the Wire

The lead wires for PT100 temperature sensors should be made of high‑temperature‑ and corrosion‑resistant materials to ensure reliable performance in high‑temperature or corrosive environments. Common wire materials include, but are not limited to, standard wires and specialty‑grade wires such as acid‑ and alkali‑resistant wires or wear‑resistant wires; the specific choice should be determined based on the actual application conditions and requirements.

II. Specifications and Length of Wire Rods

The wire’s specifications and length are also critical factors to consider when selecting a PT100 temperature sensor. The wire’s characteristics—such as diameter and insulation thickness—should meet the requirements of the intended application to ensure stable current transmission and accurate measurements. Additionally, the wire length must be determined based on the specific installation scenario; excessively long cables can increase resistance and introduce errors, compromising measurement accuracy. When extending the wiring, it is essential to use conductors with identical specifications and length and to ensure that all connections are secure and reliable.

III. Shielding Performance of Wire Conductors

For PT100 temperature sensors with long transmission distances, it is recommended to use shielded cables to minimize the impact of external electromagnetic interference on measurement results. Shielded cables effectively attenuate external electromagnetic fields, ensuring stable signal transmission and thereby enhancing measurement accuracy.

IV. Compatibility Between Wire Harnesses and Sensors

The compatibility between the wiring and the PT100 temperature sensor is also very important. It is recommended to use wires made of the same or similar materials as those of the original sensor to minimize errors arising from material differences. Additionally, when making connections, ensure that the wiring is secure and stable to prevent measurement inaccuracies caused by poor contact.

The electrical conductivity of the wire is of paramount importance. Excellent conductivity minimizes resistive losses during current transmission, thereby ensuring the accuracy of PT100 measurements. Consequently, selecting copper or alloy wires with high electrical conductivity is a prudent choice.

The temperature resistance of the wiring must also be taken into account. In high‑temperature environments, standard wires may deform due to thermal expansion and contraction, or even melt, thereby compromising the normal operation of the PT100 sensor. Consequently, it is essential to select specialized wires that can withstand elevated temperatures without deformation, ensuring the PT100’s stability and reliability under such conditions.

The cable’s immunity to electromagnetic interference is also a critical factor. In industrial environments, electromagnetic interference is ubiquitous; if the cable lacks sufficient EMI resistance, the PT100’s measurement signal may be corrupted, leading to inaccuracies. Therefore, employing shielding or twisted‑pair cabling—among other EMI‑mitigation strategies—can effectively minimize the impact of electromagnetic interference on the PT100’s measurement accuracy.

PT100 thermocouples have multifaceted requirements for their connecting wires, encompassing electrical conductivity, temperature resistance, electromagnetic interference immunity, material composition, dimensions and length, shielding effectiveness, and compatibility. Only by selecting wires that meet these specifications can the accuracy and stability of PT100 measurements in industrial temperature‑sensing applications be ensured, thereby providing robust support for industrial automation and smart manufacturing. Consequently, when choosing PT100 connection cables, it is essential to exercise careful consideration to guarantee the overall performance and reliability of the temperature‑measurement system. The appropriate cable type and specifications should be determined based on the specific application scenario and requirements to ensure measurement accuracy and dependability.
