Challenges in Feed Storage

In large-scale livestock and aquaculture operations, the sheer volume of animals necessitates the use of a diverse range of feedstuffs. Improper storage of these feeds can lead to spoilage and losses.

  • Feed spoilage and loss: Improper storage conditions can lead to feed deterioration and losses. Factors such as high temperature, high humidity, direct sunlight, and mold contamination may cause feed to spoil, reducing its nutritional value and palatability, and even rendering it unfit for use.

  • Feed molds and mycotoxins: Excessive moisture or improper storage can promote mold growth and the production of mycotoxins. These molds and toxins are harmful to livestock health, potentially causing digestive disorders, poisoning, and reduced production performance.

  • Feed Pests: Improper stacking and storage of feed can lead to pest infestations. Pests such as borers, ants, and rodents may damage the feed, resulting in contamination and a reduction in the available quantity.

  • Feed Quality Preservation: Feed stored for extended periods must maintain its quality to ensure a nutritionally balanced supply. Prolonged storage, inadequate sealing, and improper handling can all lead to a decline in feed quality.

  • Fire Risk: Certain feedstuffs, such as hay and hay bales, are highly flammable; improper storage can increase the risk of fire. Fires not only result in losses to feed supplies but also pose threats to farm facilities, livestock, and personnel safety.

Some of the challenges facing the livestock industry include feed supply, disease management, environmental protection, and improving efficiency. The following are some potential solutions:

  1. Feed Management: Optimize feed formulations to ensure livestock and poultry receive a balanced diet while minimizing waste. Employ advanced feed-processing technologies, such as pelleted feeds and feed additives, to enhance feed utilization efficiency.

  2. Disease Management: Implement preventive measures, such as vaccination and regular health screenings, to reduce disease transmission. Use smart sensors to monitor animal health, promptly detect abnormalities, and take appropriate action.

For large-scale sensor data transmission in farm livestock barns, Hengyi’s long-range wireless transmission technology is employed to relay data from various sensors to the farmer’s monitoring room.

Hengyi’s wireless technology combines LoRa and LoRaWAN with Ethernet. Locally, LoRa/LoRaWAN is used to transmit sensor data to a gateway, which then forwards the data—via a cellular network or Ethernet—to the platform and to farmers’ homes for alerting.
